Now that you’ve defined your new idea and written your user stories, you need to get it into sprint planning. But what does that look like? Let's explore.

This is part two of the ‘Delivery Chain’ series. You can find ‘Part 1’ — here.

So I guess first things first, what is sprint planning?

Sprint planning is an event that kicks off the sprint. The purpose of sprint planning is to define what can be delivered in the sprint and how that work will be achieved.

But more importantly, what happens during sprint planning? This will vary massively from team to team, so I will explore as many elements as possible.

Preparation

You know what they say, preparation is key! But its most definitely relevant when talking about sprint planning.

Backlog Refinement

Personally, I like to conduct backlog refinement sessions in between sprints (1 week before planning), prioritising the top 5 tasks and estimating the complexity of each of these tasks. Having a nice clean backlog makes sprint planning a lot easier.
